I just saw my administrator assigned rating and see that I am rated a “Weed.” The funny thing is that Russian soldiers use the same term for newbies. For them the term is “Chizhik” (chee-ZHEEK). It means “weed” and from their perspective it refers to a new recruit who springs up out of nowhere and is absolutely useless.

When I lived in Rimbach I, and several other guys, lived in the home of the local Jägermeister. He and his wife, whom we called “Mutti”, owned the entire top floor of a building just off the main drag. Two thirds of the bottom floor was a gästhaus whose name I don’t recall. The other third was a butcher shop. The Jägermeister’s place was long and skinny. They lived in an apartment at one end just at the top of the stairs. There was a small dining area at the top of the stairs. There was a long corridor with eight small bedrooms off it. The first room on the left was fitted out as a small kitchenette for us to use; small fridge, hotplate, shelf for condiments/spices, etc and a tub for dirty dishes. There was one bathroom at the end of the hall but we each had a small sink in our room. There was a small garage next to the gästhaus where the butcher would kill a pig on Tuesdays and a cow on Thursday (or maybe vice versa). I still remember the sound of the bang-stick when he shot them. He made all his own ham, bacon and sausage. I had some of the best meat from him. I used to shop at the small Edeka on the main drag. At the age of 60 I can remember the sights, sounds and smells as clearly as if it was yesterday. Geez am I a geezer.

Furth im Wald’s famous Fife and Drum Corp “Grenzfähnlein” is coming to New York to march in the Steuben Day Parade on 17 September 2011.

Grenzfähnlein is currently German champion in its category.

This article from October last year was apparently the first news of being chosen for the parade.
http://www.grenzfaehnlein.de/pdf/new_york_infoabend.pdf

The group will fly to New York on 15 September, stay in a hotel near Times Square, get tours of New York and be welcomed by the mayor at a dinner on the 16th. On the 17th there is a Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral 51st St and 5th Ave. The parade itself then runs along 5th Ave for about 2 miles from 63rd St to 86th St. Then they will take part in an Oktoberfest in Central Park. On Sunday they have some free time and sightseeing and on Monday it is back to Bavaria. Where the parade ends, 86th Street, is an old German section, Yorkville.

It has been about 25 years since I went to a Steuben Day parade. I don’t know how much German atmosphere is left around 86th St. I’ve went to Bremen House, Kleine Konditorei, the Bavarian Inn and a Schaller und Weber butcher shop on 86th St and at a drug store around the corner there I was able to buy a bottle Klosterfrau Melissengeist, but I don’t know if those places even exist anymore. Might be fun to go there for the parade this year though.

Ami Charlie recently passed along some photos of Steve “Pivo” Locke’s return to Rimbach to participate in the annual fire department dinner.

As many of you might recall from our 2009 reunion in Rimbach, Pivo joined the department, though he doesn’t (yet?) live in Rimbach. Such is his love for our village.

I found your interesting site while looking for Hoherbogen info. I worked for Harris Corp from 1965-1985 and was responsible for the design of all equipment from the antenna connector to the receiver outputs. I visited a few times during install to work out a few bugs but was unable to witness the full operation. I hope it worked well.

If you are on facebook do a search for “Further Wurzeln”. (Furth im Wald roots)
It is a small group at this time but it I think it was just started in March.
Some of you may recognize one or more of the friends of Further Wurzeln - e.g. Christa, Renate, Walter and Johanna

Also the “Furth im Wald” facebook page has a small list of friends but one of them, who happens to be a former Schwägerin (sister-in-law) of mine, has posted a number of nice photos of the town - check ‘em out.
