Lawrence F. Devereaux Jr., 80, a retired command sergeant major whose Army career included an assignment at the American Embassy in Madrid, died of causes related to dementia Friday, July 8, at ManorCare Health Services in King of Prussia.

Born in Philadelphia, Sgt. Maj. Devereaux grew up in West Philadelphia, where he attended West Catholic High School.

He met and married Pauline McGhee in 1948, the year he joined the Army. They settled in Aldan, but over the years, Sgt. Maj. Devereaux, his wife, and their six children were posted to the Philippines, Japan, Hawaii, Germany, and Spain.

“It was a great way to grow up,” said his daughter, Jackie Devereaux Sherlock, “but it was hard on my mother, moving every three years.”

When Stateside, the family lived at Fort Devens, Mass. Sgt. Maj. Devereaux moved to the Phoenixville area a year ago as his health failed.

He attained the highest rank possible for a noncommissioned officer, said son Lawrence III. His father’s work was in intelligence and centered on the decoding of enemy messages.

A highlight was his service with the Army Security Agency, which posted him to Madrid. He served as attaché at the embassy in 1969.

He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Vietnam and a half-dozen other citations, his military record shows. He retired in 1978, but he taught at the Fort Devens School of Intelligence for 20 more years.

Sgt. Maj. Devereaux, a self-educated man, was comfortable sitting on a bar stool cracking jokes. He loved a good laugh, which “you could hear in a crowd,” his daughter said.

Surviving, in addition to his son and daughter, are four other sons, Paul, Brian, Thomas, and Timothy; a sister, Sarah; a brother, Joseph Larry; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. His wife died in 2004.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at O’Leary Funeral Home, 640 E. Springfield Rd., Springfield, Delaware County. A military burial is set for 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, 1600 S. Sproul Rd., Springfield.

Donations may be made to the Herbert W. Best Post 928, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 1805 MacDade Blvd., Folsom, Pa. 19033.

I received this today from Jeremiah Davis.

Bill,

I was wondering if you could post Doug Jeansonne’s name in the Taps section. Doug passed away more than a year ago, but i think he’d have liked to be remembered on the site. He was an ASA 05K (non-morse incpt op) who served with me in Rimbach in the summer of 1966 and later at Schneeberg. He was a very colorful character who was very close to Frau Wartner and her husband Tony at the Pension Schoenblick up on the hill. In fact, I think they had a kind of business arrangement to provide sandwiches and stuff for the guys at the site, which at that time was within walking disctance of The Blick. The obit is as follows:

Date: March 5th 2010

For all who had the memorable occasion to know Doug, he has gone to the final listening post. He will be most remembered for the wonderful Jeansonne Omlette at the Schoenblick!

DOUG JEANSONNE of Slidell, LA, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2010.

Beloved husband of Evi Jeansonne for the past 42 years.

Father of Kristina Jeansonne Braud and husband Mark and Jean-Pierre Jeansonne and wife Kristina.

Son of the late Harold and Bernice Jeansonne.

Brother of Nancy Jeansonne Webre and the late Harold Michael Jeansonne, Jr.

Also survived by four grandchildren: Christopher Douglas Jeansonne, Brianna Elizabeth Jeansonne, Alyssa Nicole Jeansonne and Noelle Elisabeth Braud.

Age 67 years. A native of New Orleans, LA, and a resident of Slidell, LA, for the past 20 years. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. After living overseas for many years, Doug settled in Slidell where he began the business of Pools ‘N Stuff. Doug was a wonderful husband and father who will be dearly missed.

Bill, I don’t remember if I wrote to you about Bob or not. My husband, Robert Derham, was stationed at Rimbach with the USAF. We lived in Furth-im-Wald for a year and a half, from spring of ‘72 - fall of ‘73. We had a great time there and visited in ‘94 and ‘09. Sadly, my husband passed away suddenly last July 24 (2010), age 61. Could you put this on the Taps section of this great site? He enjoyed visiting the site and catching up with old friends. I recognize several names, also.
Thank you.

From Al Kohler, 1 December 2010:

I am sad to inform you that our friend and Army-buddy, Jim Richey, passed away yesterday, November 30th. Jim had several health problems - he was on daily dialysis for his kidneys and his heart was only functioning at about 20%. But he remained as active as he could under the circumstances.

Ironically, I flew a driver to Ft. Hood Regional Airport on Monday to pick up a Volvo tractor that we had bought from the dealer in Waco, TX. Jim and Marlene live in Mart, nearby, so I called Jim and asked if he was up to picking up our driver at the airport. He said he was, and he did that for me. I called to follow-up and to tell him my company would send him a check for his trip. His daughter answered his cell phone and told me Jim had passed away yesterday. I had just talked with him on Sunday and also had received a “mission accomplished” e-mail from him on Monday. I spoke with Marlene and she said Jim was much more ill than he would admit to anyone but that he was pleased to have something useful to do for one of his friends.

Marlene said Jim was taking his regular afternoon nap on Tuesday and passed peacefully in his sleep. I guess that’s the best we can ask for. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but I will pass them along as soon as I know them.

Keith Parker was the person killed in the car accident in which Bruce Batman was driving. The story I recall was that the car had radials on the front and bias ply on the rear, going around a sharp curve the car slid off the road and the rear passengers’ side hit a tree right in line with where Parker was sitting. That curve was well marked and truly dangerous, but Batman was not an experienced driver.
