Registration Changes

Spammy registration attempts — either by humans or bots and sometimes numbering five or more a day — have forced us to change the way new registrations are made.

From now on, readers wishing to register officially must email either me or Glenn Miller, stating their full name, preferred user name, preferred password, and provide some information about their service or interest in Rimbach. These instructions are now listed on the front page of the site.

I don’t think this will be a hardship on anyone, as new registrations have declined this past year.

Photos upload

I’ve begun uploading photos from the old Rimbachvets.org site.

It’s a relatively slow process. I upload a batch of photos, but each must be individually titled (and preferably captioned), so it’s one image at a time moving over to the Photos page on the site.

I arbitrarily started with Reunion 2004 photos since Bill had already created a category for that. Ron Biancosino’s were the first photos uploaded. Fortunately, he labeled his photos with the names of the people in them.

Be patient. I’m new at CMS, but it’s getting easier as I go along and Bill picks me up when I stumble.

E-mail List Is Down

A thunderstorm Thursday night here in Paris knocked me offline from about 11:30 p.m. until about 6 p.m. Friday. Had to wait on my service provider to come out and bring a new cable modem. Then I discovered the storm apparently borked my nine-year-old router as well.

(Just as well. It wasn’t the world’s most modern any longer, and Phillip hated it because he couldn’t connect from here to Apple’s servers via his VPN, meaning he couldn’t get any work done when he visited.)

While I’m back online — using just my wireless router, which I originally had tethered to my wired router — the e-mail server running the Rimbach listserv remains grounded until a new router arrives sometime next week.

I’ll get the list back up as soon as possible.

We’ve put up a new “Downloads of Interesting Stuff” page on the main site under the “About Us” heading. (Link here)

For now, it contains only three items, some stuff I’d forgotten about from the old site. If you have other items you think would be appropriate, please send them along, and we’ll get them posted.

Welcome To Your Forums!

Welcome to the forums area of the Rimbach Vets Web site!

You might say this is the central communications area of this site, a place where members can meet and share information about any topic.

It also serves up official reunion news, and hosts discussions about those plans.

There are a number of things about the forums you should know:

1. The forum’s membership area (the “Your Control Panel” link at the top of the screen) acts as a central information area about our members. You are urged to fill out this area as much as possible - or as much as you see fit - so others can view it and find out more about you. It’s a great way for new members to find old friends.

You can also set your information so it will not be visible in such lists. The option is yours.

2. RSS feeds abound. You can subscribe to the whole forum feed, or just the feed of a particular forum area.

3. You can have the system email you when someone has posted in a topic area you have posted in.

4. Of course, you can upload your own avatar. The dimension limit is 100x100 pixels, and the file limit is 10K.

5. You can upload a photo to accompany a topic post. There are limits to the number of photos and total file size.

IMPORTANT: This function is not intended as a mechanism for the display of your favorite photos. If you have several photos you want others to see: 1) e-mail them to Glenn Miller so he can post them in the gallery area; 2) simply post a link to them on your ISP’s server or other server; or 3) post a link to them on Flickr, etc. Abuses of this function will be deleted.

6. The forums also act as the commenting area for our bloggers. Links to comments from the blog pages take readers to this area.

7. The forums’ membership profile settings area allows members to enter a variety of information about themselves and should be used as a “Rimbach vets membership list.” Site members can view a list of site members, then click on an individual’s name to see the details he or she has entered. Note: Individual users can opt to leave their names off the site membership list.

8. You can use membership settings to make your own signature for posts, add a photo to your profile, and create an avatar.

9. You can add polls to topics.

10. Lousy speller? Don’t worry, you can spellcheck your entries before posting them.

Our forums are a powerful feature of our site. Explore them and see what they can do for you.

Internet Explorer 6 Fix

Today I added a line of CSS to fix a problem some users of Internet Explorer 6 were having, where the top navigation bar on the main pages fell apart and disrupted the entire page.

Hat Tip: Jack Bernazzani for alerting me to the problem and helping with testing for the fix.
