2009 Reunion Photos

I’ve posted to the gallery area here 164 of the 500-plus photos I took during the 2009 Rimbach reunion. Click here for the direct link. They can be accessed from the gallery area as well, of course.

For those who might want them, higher resolution versions are available on my personal gallery by clicking here.

Those with photos, which means just about everyone, please burn them — all or just those you think appropriate — to a CD or DVD and send them to me for posting on our site. You can also post them to your own site(s), of course, but I think it’s important to keep copies here for posterity ... or whatever.

Contact me by email for my mailing address, and I’ll get them put up as quickly as possible.

Review and comments on Rimbach 2009

Rimbach 2009 was great, right up there with 2004 and 2007. With spouses, significant others, and friends and children, there were at times 41 of us. Activities included visiting with our Rimbach family, the Hill, and the Schönblick. Side visits to Domazlice and the glass city, too. Charlie Hess and all were perfect hosts. The BierFest was 3 days of fun. Looking forward to the next reunion (2014 or sooner?). Pivo will obvioulsy have to go back for the Fire Department festivities or he’ll be thrown off the force!
Special thanks to Charlie and his wife Rita who were our primary contact and liasion with officialdom in Rimbach. Also special thanks to Erwin and Rike Brandl who were with Charlie and Rita helping to make our stay great.

Rimbach Weather

Looks to be very different weather for our Rimbach reunion in 2009 than it was for the last fest in 2004. I remember then my room was like a sauna for a day or two until things cooled down a bit.

But now the forecast calls for 65F and light rain for Friday’s fest opening. (The forecast is for Furth im Wald. There are at least two Rimbachs in Germany, and I couldn’t tell which was which. The forecast was pretty close to FiW’s, though.) And that forecast holds from now (Monday) through Friday.

So maybe long-sleeved shirts and a jacket are in order. And don’t forget an umbrella!

Karel Hlasny’s Nephew Wishes to Meet in Rimbach

Earlier today I received an email from Josef Hlasny, a nephew of Karel Hlasny. He has done extensive research into his uncle’s history, but lacks sufficient information about his time at DLI. He wishes to meet with our group in Rimbach sometime during our reunion and chat about his uncle.

I’ve posted below both his email and a history of himself that he attached.

I responded that we’d be very glad to meet with him during the reunion, and I was sure that former students of his uncle who are not attending would be pleased to correspond with him via email about their memories of Pan Hlasny.

I will also grant him “guest” membership on the forums so he can post, should some of you wish to correspond that way. His e-mail address is at the end of his e-mail below, as well.

Dobrý den, Pane Lamb

Few months ago I found at Internet that some US soldiers (from Monterey) have Web site about RimbachVets.Org. (Germany). I wrote at your address my interest about “Rimbach membership” . I received your response, see this letter;

[Copy of my e-mail]

My main interest is found some memories about my uncle Karel Hlasny from former “Monterey students”. I established (2006) some memories about Karel, however, without more details about Karel´s teaching in Monterey, in his birth-town Bludov. Recently, to the end of May 2009 I also completed in english (see the letter enclosed). There I also described some family relationships.

I have “weekend cottage” in Javorna (near Zelezna Ruda, Sumava) - distance to Rimbach is only about 30 kilometers. So I would like to meet you and “Monterey Vets” during next days about your Rimbach Reunion 2009.

Sincerely

Josef Hlasny, DVM, PhD

A copy of his attachment:

Colonel Karel Hlasny (1911-1982) was older brother of my father Josef Hlasny (1914- 1996). From September 8, 1952 uncle Karel have served under Civil Service as an Instructor in Foreign Languages at the Army Languague School in Monterey, to the end of 1979. He escaped from Czechoslovakia in November 1948- as chief of Staff of the 1st Armored Division in Prague with the rank of Gen Staff Lt/Colonel.

Our family lived in Karel´s birth-house in Bludov with Karel´s mother Anna Hlasny (1876-1953) and Karel´s father Antonin Hlasny (1871-1956). In the last weekend of September 1948 Karel went Bludov for a reunion with his family, parents, brothers and a sister. He never talked with his elderly parents about his “military-communist troubles” and intentions to leave Czechoslovakia. That was the last time he would ever see his family…

See more details - website of Bludov, Czech Republic;

http://www.bludov.cz/O-Bludove/Vyznamni-bludovsti-rodaci/Karel-Hlasny/World-War-and-espionage-Cold-War-story.html

However, our family in Bludov was persecuted by communist regime. During 1980s I collaborated with Czech neurologist associate professor Ladislav Steidl (Palacky University, Olomouc). I had a lecture (in French) in Geneve at “3rd European Congress on Magnesium” (March, 1990). This was my first travel to “western countries”, because I had my passport as far as from January 1990.

After the “1989 revolution” in former Czechoslovakia, there were changes about the staff of the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy. I was selected (from October 1, 1990 for animal nutrition teaching because I had more of experiences as veterinarian- animal nutritionist in the field conditions. I was “rehabilitated” (November 1990; University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Brno) , so I quickly concluded above citated scientific articles about the “mechanism of Mg- deficiency”; as the disertation work (“PhD thesis”)“Causes of magnesium deficiency in ruminants” (23 March 1991).

In Geneve I obtained some connections with “Mg- researchers” and after few months later (during my teaching in Brno) I received the invitation (December 1990) from West Virginia University as a “Visiting Research Fellow”. There I collaborated (April 1- December 31, 1991) with an international team led-headed by professor R.L.Reid about the grazing trial in ewes…

There I obtained some literature scientific experiences , and I continued about the alternative ” BSE ammonia- magnesium theory” (mad cow disease). In July 2008 I had the poster-lecture “Neurodegeneratve diseases and schizophrenia as hyper or hypofunction of NMDA receptors” at 29th World Veterinary Congress in Vancouver. See more details about my “professional” curriculum vitae in my website; HYPERLINK “http://www.bse-expert.cz” http://www.bse-expert.cz and also my comments in world journals;

Nearly Reunion Time!

So I got to thinking: Two weeks from tonight, right about now, I’ll be about three hours from landing in Frankfurt.

Yes, I’m pumped for the reunion!

I look forward to:

- That first beer with old friends.
- That second beer with old friends.
- Beer with new friends!
- Beer with our soon-to-be-new-friends at the German army unit meeting!
- The fest parade!
- The fest, with all its sights and sounds and smells!
- More beer with old and new friends.
- Seeing the site again. (I guess we’re still allowed. <g>)
- That cute Czech waitress at the B-hof. (Steve remembers her, too.)
- Just standing there next to the fest tent, gazing up at The Hill as the sun sets. Remembering.

Anyhoo ... Almost time to get your Rimbach on, boys and girls!

Was browsing just now on Deutsche Bahn’s site, checking schedules, and it seems you can now buy tickets and reserve seats online from the U.S., then print out your own tickets. Wasn’t that way for my 2004 and 2007 trips.

Anyone use this service yet?

Who’s Planning To Attend?

Someone asked me tonight how many were planning at attend next year’s reunion, and while there have been several who’ve said they would over the past few months, I don’t think anyone’s been counting. So I thought I’d ask again, then keep a running count in a separate post in the “Official Reunion Announcements” forum, updated with new info when available.

Please indicate if 1) you’re planning to attend, 2) know that you (unfortunately) can’t attend, or 3) may or may not, but don’t know yet. Also, those who are attending, please post and let us know where you are planning to stay during the reunion so we can plan accordingly.
