A very long, but good primer on the euro’s present woes — what’s at stake and how it happened. By Paul Krugman at the NYT.

It has been 60 years since the Schuman declaration started Europe on the road to greater unity. Until now the journey along that road, however slow, has always been in the right direction. But that will no longer be true if the euro project fails. A failed euro wouldn’t send Europe back to the days of minefields and barbed wire — but it would represent a possibly irreversible blow to hopes of true European federation.

So will Europe’s strong nations let that happen? Or will they accept the responsibility, and possibly the cost, of being their neighbors’ keepers? The whole world is waiting for the answer.

Let’s hope the Federated EU does fail. Send the southern countries back into servitude for holidaying industrial northerner’s. Get rid of all the economic disasters and form an EU based on the solid 6. Return to EEC principals.
Down with EU Federalism. Let the Spanish drowned in their subsidised wine, let the Italians choke on their industrial waste olives and let the Portugese learn how to fish once again. Bring on those Greek godesses with the hairy armpits ...
Yeah Europe as Americans think of it does not really exist. A very complex project which brought 27 countries together with more on the cards… CRAZY

It’s just the first step in creating one nation on the planet. All for one and one for whatever he can get first. Europe has disappeared like the American West.
