HHO Installing The MAF MAP Sensor Enhancer

You are looking at a Mass Air Flow sensor, or MAF sensor for short. This one is from my 2008 Toyota Tundra, and it is located near the air cleaner. The air filter is located in the box directly to the left, and what the MAF sensor does is control the amount of time that the fuel injectors are open via the ECU (computer).

Every vehicle will have a mass air flow sensor if it is very new, or a MAP sensor in most older models. MAP stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. Both sensors look very much alike and both do the same thing. You will find the MAP sensor around the throttle body by the manifold. My 1998 Saturn uses a MAP sensor.

This article is about installing the very easy to do MAP or MAF Sensor Enhancer box, see my Hydrogen Project Saturn SL1 Part 3 earlier. This is the box that has the control dial that allows you to cut your gasoline back going into the engine. This is the device that most users are afraid to install, for fear they will get it wrong and damage their car. This is the device that will save you the most money, and get your vehicle running top notch. You must have the hydrogen generator installed and functioning first.

Find out if you have a MAF or MAP sensor. The easy way if you don’t know, is go to your computer and try to buy a MAP or MAF sensor for your particular vehicle. Make sure you get the model and model year right in your search. You will have one or the other. If yours is a MAF sensor, look around the air intake by the air cleaner and filter until you locate it. If yours is MAP sensor, then look for it somewhere near the manifold and throttle body.

Which ever one you have, the device to control the gasoline is the same, and the way it installs is the same.

IMPORTANT*** Always disconnect your battery on the positive side while making electrical connections***

I use a readily available stock MAF Sensor Enhancer which I bought on E-Bay for my Toyota Tundra. I made a modification to the one installed on my Saturn, for my own peace of mind. However after much testing, I have come to realize that the mod I made to the enhancer box was unnecessary. Just buy a reputable stock product and you’ll be fine.

Almost all Map Sensors and all MAF sensors have five wires, see picture. The ones that don’t are earlier models for the most part and have three wires. What we are looking for is the control wire. In all 6 installations I have been a part of, the center wire was always the control wire. I know for a fact that it is also the center wire on a three wire MAP Sensor. I don’t recommend installation before before checking out the center wire. Here is the way to test and find out if you have the right wire.

Using a Multi-meter:
Find a very thin needle in your wife’s sewing kit. Use a piece of tape, any kind of tape will do, and tape the needle to the positive red lead of the meter. Prick the middle lead of the MAF sensor, just enough to get the needle into the wire past the insulation. I usually try to prick the lead from an angle sideways. You just want the thin needle to make contact with the inner wire. Touch the black lead of the meter to ground. Have someone start the vehicle. What you should see is voltage between 0-5 volts. All the other wires will have higher voltages. Then to make double sure, have someone rev the engine while you measure the results. You should see the voltage vary greatly as the engine speed goes up and down. If so, you have found your wire. If the voltage stays steady, look at one of the other wires until you find the control wire.

Disconnect the car’s battery on the positive side. Now cut the control wire you found about 8 inches up from the sensor. Put a male crimp connector on one side. Put a female crimp connector on the other side. Think about this, if you ever want to take the enhancer or hydrogen generator out of your vehicle, you can just plug the two sides back together. That’s being smart and doing it right.

You will find 2 or 3 wires on your MAF sensor enhancer. You only need two wires, so if you have the 3 wire model you have the choice of connecting the back wire to ground again. The reason it has a ground wire is so you can take measurements thru the voltage measuring points on it. If you connect this ground wire, you must have the polarity right. I suggest avoiding it. Keep it simple is my motto. Just don’t use the ground wire on the 3 wire models, which is the black wire. There’s not much you can do with those voltage readings anyway, unless you love to chart numbers. The readings differ from vehicle to vehicle. All we want is the control unit between both sides of the wire we just cut.

You should have either two wires on the 2 wire enhancer, or two wires left on the 3 wire enhancer.( you are not going to use the black wire). Get your crimp tool and crimp a small male end to one wire of the enhancer. Crimp a small female end onto the other wire of the enhancer. Now plug those wires into the ends you just put on the control wire. That’s all there is to it. You should be ready to control the amount of gasoline to mix with your new hydrogen.

Put loom around the connections, see picture. This MAF sensor in my picture is already finished. The plastic loom I put around it looks factory doesn’t it. You wouldn’t even know the connections were there.

For those who wish to hook up the black ground wire of the MAF Sensor Enhancer, please note that even though it is not necessary…you must get the polarity of the voltage correct on the other two wires.. Otherwise you can do harm to your ECU (computer). So here are instructions. You will have 3 wires. Hook them as follows:
Black to ground
Green to MAF Sensor
Red to ECU (otherwise known as your car’s computer)
