Another favored hazing ritual was the “donut run.” There’s one I’ll never forget…. It was Chuck Custer’s first mid and, about an hour before shift change, someone went around collecting money for the donut run. After the money was collected, Chuck was informed that, since he was the new guy on flight, he had to go get the donuts at the German site. Not knowing any better, Chuck took the money and set out for the guard shack at the neighbor’s site. About 30 minutes later, when we were all beginning to wonder what was taking so long, Chuck returned with an assortment of German pastries in a box. We never did find out whether the guard at the German site knew about this “ritual” of ours and wanted to turn the tables on us or if he just didn’t understand the crazy Americans and went to their cafeteria and gave Chuck the baked goods just to make him go away. The details of this “backfire” made it into the 6910th SG’s newspaper in Augsburg.
