In Hopewell Township, N.J., the veterans of American Legion Post 339 have put their building up for sale. “Today’s vets don’t come out,” 82-year old Jim Hall told The Times of Trenton last month. The post is down from 425 paying members in the 1960s and ‘70s to 202 this year; only about a dozen regularly attend.

But it’s America that has changed, not vets.

It seems there are fewer liberals in the all volunteer military.

I am sure you are right about that, but it is also true that that which all of us hated (the draft) was what brought us together in a bond of friendship that unfortunately today’s youth does not experience.  The bond of those who were in the combat arms is even greater.  I don’t think that membership in the American Legion necessarily qualifies one to be a liberal.  As a bona fide old fart, I can think that there was a certain amount of good and pride that came with the universal draft and it was a rite of passage that brought many into manhood.

Nor does it qualify one to be a conservative but fewer liberals are in American Legions because fewer liberals join the military.

I agree.  You seem to be right about fewer liberal joining the military.  I guess I am just dense because I don’t see the connection.  Perhaps I don’t see the AL as a liberal organization.
