The artificial lake/reservoir between Furth im Wald and Eschlkam called Drachensee, a flood control/environmental/recreation project, has finally been completed, 40 years after it was first proposed.

Here’s a report from Middle Bavarian TV, an on-line video service of the Mittelbayerische newspaper group.  The guy being interviewed, Markus Söder, in the loden green Tracht jacket, is the Minister of the Environment for Bavaria.

A Roman Catholic organization called The World Apostolate of Fatima is now raising money to erect a Mariensäule, St. Mary’s Column, at the Drachensee.  In addition to the religious significance this action would be partially in remembrance of the confrontations between the western democracies and the former Soviet Union and especially as a reference to a statement made in 1917 by Lenin when he said “The fate of Europe will be decided at the Mariensäule in Munich.”
(This is in English but it is still tough to follow)
