North Texas is still on track for a big cold front, set to arrive in our area midnight-ish. They to expect some of the coldest temps in the past 10 years, with winds of 25-35 mph pushing the chill down to zero or below.
Some of the Fort Worth NWS discussion from this afternoon:
WIND CHILLS WILL BE EXTRAORDINARY ON THURSDAY. ... CLOUD COVER SOUTHERN HALF WILL KEEP HIGHS BELOW FREEZING FRIDAY… HIGHS MAY
BE NEAR 20F ALONG RED RIVER. COLDEST NIGHT STILL APPEARS TO BE SATURDAY MORNING WHEN WINDS ARE THE LIGHTEST AND SKIES ARE CLEAR.
EXPECT SINGLE DIGITS IN SOME LOCATIONS OF NORTH AND WEST. AS IS TYPICALLY THE CASE ... WARMING TREND THEREAFTER WILL BE MUCH SLOWER
THAN GUIDANCE SUGGESTS.
I think it’s supposed to affect West Texas down Glenn’s way in San Angelo, too.
Going to be a cold four or five days in North Texas! I got my couch and my blanket and my drinks, hot and cold. So I’ll just hibernate when possible. Filling up with high-priced gas tonight so I won’t have to do it during the big chill. I hate that.
The front came through as scheduled. When I went for coffee before work this morning it was about 25F with a wind chill of 9F or so. It began to clear mid-morning, and by then the temp was 20F with a chill of 4F. Warmed up a tad during the day. The airport’s Web site shows we make it to 28F, but the chill was a killer all day.
They’re forecasting a low of 13-16 for us tonight with wind chills of zero to minus-5.
And, yes, I did drag out the old Air Force parka this morning!
It was a brisk 21 degrees here this morning. At 10 AM it’s still only 25 and we’re not predicted to get much warmer before we dip to a predicted 10 overnight tonight. The NWS is guessing we’ll be back to “normal” temperatures by Sunday afternoon.
We were at 15 this morning with a high forecast of 25. Our high yesterday was supposed to be 29 but it got up to 31.
We won’t get back to “normal” temperatures for more than a week, at least. Our averages here are low 50s and high 30s. We have under “normal’ for a couple of weeks now.
When I went for coffee this morning about 7:15, it was 12F with a wind chill of minus-4F. The coffee was exceptionally welcome!
Now at 1 p.m. it’s 24F with a wind chill of 12F. Still damned nippy for Texas.
The Weather Channel says a low of 13 tonight, but they’re kind of general. NWS in Fort Worth has let its wind chill advisory lapse and says the winds will be much lighter tonight. So those wind chill figures might not make it to below zero again here.
But a few degrees in wind chill really won’t make much difference between cold and ... well, cold.
Spiegel says Germany and the rest of Europe could get hammered again with snow on Saturday. Read ยป
A look at the Web cam at the ski slope on The Hill just now showed it already snowing there.
The temp was 9F this morning at 7 AM. We’re supposed to get up to 46 this afternoon, then a dip down to 18 tonight and back up to 50 tomorrow. So, the big cold blast is starting to lift out.
The airport site says we did 10F for a low last night. Winds had died down considerably. When I went for coffee this morning it was still 14F with wind chill of 9F.
It’s 21 now, and the high today is to be 35. (They keep inching up that high figure. It was 31 earlier this morning.) Back to 14 tonight before making it to 40 on Sunday. Then a week of 40s and into the 50s.
But the long-range forecast (notoriously unworthy) shows possibility of snow on Thursday. Will keep an eye on that.
The low last night was 14, the airport says, and we’re already up to 34. Woohoo! Above freezing!
Forecast says 40 or so for today, lows only in the upper 20s tonight, then warming to about 50 the rest of the week. Potential for some heavy rain Thursday night and Friday, though. So long as it ain’t freezing, that’s OK.
We were at 13 this morning, but warmed to 53 this afternoon. A gradual warm up coming with 21 tonight, then 26 tomorrow, then 35 Tuesday night. That’s about where we should be in mid-January. Highs back to the upper 50s.
Back here in old Bavaria we are floating between -5 and -20C. Pretty much most of northern Europe is getting attacked by weather lows. I think England has had one of the worst winters in decades. they really are not prepared for it. but to top it off even the trains ICE’s (yes that is a real acronym) which run fairly well in the cold stopped “cold” in the warm air of the EuroTunnel. For those followers of the beloved English tabloids we now add to: wrong leaves on the track, wrong snow flakes (many different types of crystals) we have now “wrong air”. Several days of real rough winter but now just cold again. Snows gonna stay for a while and sure hope there will be very little new falls but who knows after all it’s winter.
I know: cold weather and lots of snow. Been looking at the photos out of Europe on the news sites.
We’ve had the cold part, but the snow hasn’t been nearly as much as Europe is getting. Been following the Web cam at the ski lift and in Neukirchen, and it looks like skiers won’t have a problem around The Hill this winter.
About back to what amounts for a normal winter for us now. Made it to 52F here today under sunny skies.
I keep thinking that one day we should hold a reunion in Rimbach in winter. Just ‘cause it’s so damned pretty. But then I remember it’s also damned cold.
The real troubling thing with traveling in winter now a days is the weight allowance. Most cheap European flights your looking at 10-15 kilos. Even some trans Atlantic flights have halved the allowance from 70 to 35 pounds. Try that with heavy winter clothes.
Viechtach and area is very cold last weeks and looks to remain so .... but a little glitch tomorrow or next day could bring ice rain… 20cm new powder snow today and I got my ass chewed out by a tired snow worker for shoving the snow they piled into my drive back into the road—- no allowed. A real pain as back in Mosel land we worked together with clearance crews, here they dictate… oh well
