I had an email today from Vanessa Nix Anthony seeking some help with information that may pertain to her father, Larry Green. While he wasn’t a member of our group, I thought it possible someone here might have some helpful information for her. If so, you can post it here or email her directly at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Her email:

Dear Mr. Lamb;

I’m actually trying to find more information about my father and his unit. My father passed away three years ago now and I am working on a book about him- (more from my perspective but I was 3-5 years old when we lived in what was then West Germany) my father was stationed there as a border guard. I am not even sure if your site has anything to do with his unit.

I am currently searching through old paperwork of his to find the information about what his unit was named or numbered and it’s exact location. Here’s what I remember: my father guarded “the wall” on the West German side as a member of the Army’s Calvary- black berets, he would be gone for around 30 days “out in the field” as he called it. We lived in both Bamberg and Nurnberg during our stay there and as far as I can tell from internet research that would have meant he was stationed at Herzo Base or maybe Warner Barracks. He did always talk about going to the barracks but in my limited knowledge I think that barracks is a term for soldier housing on any base- right?

I once stayed in the barracks, unbeknowst to the higher-ups I slept on the floor under my father’s bed with his buddies covering for him or caring for me if he was called away for something. This was only for a day or two while my mother recovered from delivery my sister at the base hospital. Evidently my parents didn’t feel they had someone to watch me during that time.

From my father’s pictures I can see that he had a patch on his beret that was sort of diagonally segmented in two parts one an orangey-yellow color and the other red- the closest I have seen to that is the Blackhorse symbol with the horse on it (though I cannot see a horse on his patch due to the pic being too small.)

I remember my father bringing home some “rations” for us to try so I could see what daddy ate. Though I was very young when we lived there I have many vibrant memories of life in West Germany, all due to how new and different everything was, I think.

Anyway, I applied for membership to your group in the hopes of getting connected with men or other families that may have been stationed with my father or knew him back then. It would have been 1974-1976 or so. My mother is severely disabled from a massive stoke some 15 years ago now and as such she only has pieces of memories and many times even these are inaccurate. I am hoping to fill in some of the gaps in my own memory of the family history with some concrete information or interviews with people who knew my father.

In any case, please let me know if I am knocking on the right door, as it were, and if so if you can point me in the right direction of folks who might have served with him during that time.

I appreciate any help you can give.

Sincerely,

Vanessa Nix Anthony

The black beret and the orange and red segmented patch remind me of the Armored Divisions that were located in that area during that time frame.
I believe 1st Armored Division had control of that area of Germany.

Attached is a picture of some of the Armored Division patches.
