The upcoming Rimbach reunion at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif., is NOT just for DLI graduates, but for all who served in Rimbach in our little group. Non-linguists will find Monterey a fabulous and beautiful place and will not lack for things to do, learn or see.
Plus, heck, it’s a reunion! There will be ... well, us!
Dat’s a fact, Jack. The Monterey Bay Aquarium alone is worth the trip. That’s where they filmed the aquarium scenes for the Star Trek movie with the whales. Can’t recall the title.
Glenn Miller
Bill Lamb
John Campbell
Eugene Jung
Les Fulsome
Ed Miller
Howie Currier
Gene Bluford
Jeremiah Davis (maybe)
Phil Wetzel (is the first week in November still not looking good, Phil?)
Al Kohler
Jim Beaudin
That’s a dozen, not counting spouses/guests.
And I received a few e-mails directly from others who said they’d be interested. Perhaps they’ll come enter their wishes in this Forum.
Obviously attending the DLI anniversary ball at the Post-Naval Graduate school is optional. And I’m sure the DLI alumni organization will arrange for a DLI tour regardless of whether you’re attending the ball or not, or if you were a DLI graduate or not.
I’ve not been up to Monterey for about five years but the last time I was there, it was as beautiful as ever scenic-wise. Plus there’s a lot more lodging available five years ago than when I was there twelve years prior. And now that they converted the Fort Ord grounds to a California State university, I’m sure there’s even more options as well as more drinking holes.
Would love to see more of the guys who attended my Czech class attend this reunion but other than Wes Eller, the others have fallen off the face of the “Rimbach” earth. Come on you guys, sound off here and come to the reunion!
As luck would have it, I’ll be going TDY to the Presidio in August (date still undetermined, but mid-August). I’ll be there to brief our civilian employees and provide some training, but I’ll have plenty of free time to scout out hotels and talk with Ben De La Selva from the DLI Alumni Assn, if he’s available.
I work in civilian personnel at Goodfellow as an HR specialist. Part of my job is performance management (read: appraisals) and I’ll be briefing the AF civilians (who are serviced by Goodfellow) and their commanders on a number of related topics.
I haven’t been to DLI since ‘92 when I was still on active duty and spent a week there representing Air Education and Training Command and Air Intelligence Agency in the Russian Course Curriculum Review. That was back in DLPT III days.
My TDY to DLI was finally firmed up today. I will arrive in Monterey around 3:30 PM on August 17, spend August 18 and 19 in briefings and discussions (I’m not expecting a full day of work on either day) and I’m taking a day of leave on August 20 and returning to San Angelo on August 21.
I’ll contact Ben De La Selva before I leave to arrange a meeting and tell him about our reunion plans.
I am wondering if this reunion is going to take place, as no one seems to saying they will attend. I was planning to check flights, etc. but if interest is fading…
I spoke with Steve Bringle a bit this evening as he was driving home from work. He’s definitely going and just wanted to know the exact dates. I told him the open house and our tour was (hope I’m right) Friday, Nov. 5. Not sure about the dinner, but figured the official functions would be Friday and Saturday, but we could come and go at leisure outside of that.
I’ll fly in on that Wednesday or Thursday prior and likely leave that Sunday or Monday, but that’s not firm as yet. Just in thinking mode.
