In reading the article that Kaipo linked above it is clear that one lesson to learn is that the Republicans are interested only in keeping the economy down until the election in the (sadly probably true) belief that it enhances their chances at the polls.
The article reports that Harry Reid pulled the measure to pay for the settlement with the black farmers group in an attempt to get Republican votes for the small business bill. Guess what - you have bill for small businesses largely made up of tax cuts for small businesses - something the Republicans always say they are in favor of - Senator Reid takes out things the Republicans don’t like and they still vote against it. By the way the House of Representatives has voted to pay for the settlement but measures to pay for the settlement have come up 6 times in the Senate and never got any Republican support.
Two days ago they voted against support for medical expenses for 9/11 first responders - shameful. It is all a pattern to slow down the Senate and make the Dems and Obama look bad without regard to the lives of black farmers, small businessmen or New York’s emergency responders.
By the way - Blanche Lincoln is Chair of the Agriculture Committee and as such has support the settlement funds all along, but since the Republicans won’t support that she will take what she can get. The current budget of the Dept of Ag should not have to pay for the legal settlement in favor of the black farmers.
It is Republican obstructionism, deceit, and thirst to regain control of the Senate and/or House that is holding up the settlement money. Nothing else.
