Hydrogen Conversion One Handy Device

One handy device, to use for a hydrogen hybrid car, is called a Fuse Buddy. I could not find one where I live, so I ordered it on line. There are two models available, distinguished only by differences in the amount of amperage that the fuse buddy can read. One model reads up to 20 amps, the other can safely read up to 30 amps current.

What makes this device unique and very handy to tune your hydrogen generator is the small size and cost of the item, and the ability to read right through an actual car fuse. You can place the fuse in the fuse buddy itself, and read right through the fuse to determine if it is passing electrical current. This makes a fuse buddy ideal to tune a hydrogen generator, if you have car fuse holders like mine built in-line with the hydrogen generator. The Hydro Super 2 that I use in both my vehicles has a fuse holder in-line by the actual car battery, and each cell has a 30 amp fuse. I use the fuse buddy to set up the hydrogen generator when first installed, or to set the hydrogen output after changing water. It can also be taken with you in the glove box of your vehicle, and can provide a quick test of the hydrogen output when traveling. Think of it like checking your oil to see if it is full, before traveling further.

One tip I have for you, is to actually install a 30 amp car fuse in the fuse buddy body, buy an extra fuse from the parts store. Keep it inside the fuse buddy tester, that way you will not only have back-up fuse on the road, but you will also be able to just take the fuse out of your hydrogen generator’s fuse holder, and plug the fuse buddy right into the fuse holder. After your check, simply put the fuse you took out right back into the fuse holder. This avoids some repetitious steps, and makes checking simpler.

One mistake I made, and almost every novice to hydrogen convertors seems to make, is to try and get the most hydrogen from the convertor immediately. What you really want however is the hydrogen generator to run cool and very efficient. When you set up your Hydro Super 2, or any other hydrogen generator for that matter, you want to find the lowest amperage that the convertor can use to start producing hydrogen. Remember the clear hoses I recommended to you. They now come into play.

If your hydrogen convertor is new, or if you just drained the water from your generator and are ready to refill do the following. Get a gallon plastic jug of either rain water or steam distilled water. Take an empty plastic jug and fill it 1/3 full with fresh water. I use KOH or potassium hydroxide as a catalyst Others use baking soda, white vinegar, mineral water, etc. What ever you use, go slowly putting it in the water. I put 1/5 teaspoon of KOH in the water. Then close the lid and shake the jug until well mixed. I then pour the mixture into the water tank.

Remove the fuse from the hydrogen generator and place your Fuse Buddy in the fuse holder. Start the engine and see how many amps your Fuse Buddy reads. Watch your hoses and water tank. My Hydro Super 2 starts making bubbles of hydrogen at 6 amps of current draw. If my amp reading on the Fuse Buddy is below 6 amps, I simply drop in another flake of KOH, and stir it into the water. I wait and see how high the current comes up. KOH is strong, one flake will raise it.

If my reading is too high, say over 7 amps, I put more distilled water into the water tank and stir it in. What I am looking for is exactly 6.5 amps. The manual says 8 amps, but I want the lowest reading I can get which is 6.2 amps, and to go slightly over that reading. At this point the hydrogen generator is producing hydrogen with the minimum amount of power from the battery. Once the hydrogen convertor has been running for 3 to 4 hrs time, the temperature will rise some, and the amps will come up as well, sometimes even doubling when on long all day drives. But your convertor is making hydrogen very well and efficiently, and you will get into the sweet spot around 8 amps very quickly by starting off at the bottom.

You are now set until you change water again. The only reason to check from this point on is if the temperature dropped dramatically. I found that in mountains, and where it’s very cold, you sometimes have to put in another flake of KOH in the water. KOH remains in the water, most of the time, all you have to do is add more water to bring it to the full line, as you use water driving. I use about 3 ounces of water every 125 miles. When I tank, I check the water level and fill it to the full line. It’s like filling up your gas tank, hydrogen or water in this case is your other fuel. You will only need to tank about every 500 miles if you get your hydrogen generator working well, so it’s not much of a hassle to add a glass of distilled water.
