Hydrogen Generator Efficency

I wanted to share some of the things I have learned with using a hydrogen generator in my wife’s Saturn SL1. Much of the knowledge about using hydrogen convertors is relatively new.

Use rain water if you can as your water source, it is the very best water. West Texas does not get much rain, and I have never thought about trying to collect it, but if you happen to live in an area with above rain fall, then by all means take advantage of your situation. After rain water, use steam distilled water. Make sure it’s distilled by steam and not by reverse osmosis or filtering.

I have tried baking soda, salt, lye, mineral water, vinegar, concentrated sea water, and a few other catalysts to up the production of the hydrogen. By far the best additive to your water, to up your hydrogen conversion, is about ¼ teaspoon of KOH, better known as Potassium Hydroxide. You can buy a 2 lb container of it from AAA Chemical on-line for about $8. That amount might last you the rest of your life.

Gap your spark plugs about .005 wider when using a hydrogen generator. My stock spark plugs were gapped at .040 inches, and increasing the gap to .045 helped the fuel burn more completely, and increased the MPG. I tested 15 different brands of spark plugs, but saw no mileage gains or decreases with any of them.

Use synthetic oil, it is the oil of choice now. It costs more, but due to the amount of heat it can withstand, and still retain the viscosity and lubricating abilities, not to mention longer oil change intervals, it is more than worth the money. Many say they get better mileage. I have never used anything but synthetic oil in my vehicles, but I do believe that 0-20 weight synthetic oil will lubricate and protect better than 5-30 regular oil. It has less friction too, which should mean more miles per gallon.

Keep your tires aired up. The recommended air pressure for my tires is 32 psi on the Saturn SL1. I run 34psi on the front ( front wheel drive) and 30 psi on the rear tires. It gets a bit better mileage, but is more comfortable and the tires wear better.

Use regular gasoline. Hydrogen is equal to 124 octane gasoline. Mixing hydrogen with your gasoline as fuel will give you more than enough octane boost. I have tested this very extensively, don’t spend more on gasoline when running hydrogen, you’re wasting your money. There is no MPG difference between regular and super gasoline.

Buy a 2.5 gallon gasoline can, and check your filling station. There are big differences between pumps, and the people who regulate them. Almost all pumps are set to your disadvantage. If you put 3.2 gallons in a 2.5 gallon gas can at the pump, go somewhere else next time. You can use this as a test, and then pour the gasoline from the canister into your tank and continue filling. When you find one that gets very close to 2.5 gallons, tank there whenever you can.

Change the water in your hydrogen generator every 3 months when you do your oil change, and more if your drive a lot. When the water gets either thick, or dirty then change it. Check the water level in your hydrogen generator’s water tank every time you get gasoline. Top it off to the full line with fresh water. You will generally only get about 3-6 ounces of water in, but keep it full and it will last longer between water changes.

The very first time you put water in your hydrogen generator, you want it to pull 8-9 amps when cold. That way it will run at about 14 amps after 4-6 hrs driving. That is very efficient and about what your headlights pull. Add enough KOH to the water to draw 8 amps, but don’t over do it. More is not better. You want it to run cool, efficient, and clean. Trying to up the hydrogen production by increasing your amps with too much KOH, will only make it sizzle and not produce as much hydrogen. Once your get the 8-9 amps you want, it will sometimes depend on how warm or cold the weather is, then leave the water alone until it’s time to change water again. Koh stays in the water, and all you have to do for 3 months time is add water. It’s very much like an oil change, change water, check it, add a bit of KOH if you need to get 8 amps, and then leave it alone until you change again.
