View Hoher Bogen
The Hoher Bogen is the mountain range on which the U.S. Army site Det K and associated U.S. Air Force units were located. The site was located on the Eckstein (1073 m) peak. At the other end of the range is Burgstall (976 m) where the TV tower was located. The access road ran the ridge between these two points, hence the term Ridgerunner.
Additional peaks include Schwarzriegel (1079 m) where the German and French units had their installations and Ahornriegel (1050 m) where the ski area is located. One other highpoint, just to the northwest of Eckstein, has an elevation above 1000 meters. That peak is named Bärenriegel (1017 m).
Origin of the name
According to research cited in the below linked German Wikipedia article, the name Hoher Bogen does not refer to the shape of the mountain ridge (a “high curve, arch or bow”), but to the fact that the Counts of Bogen once built a fortress on the mountain. So this was the higher located castle of the house of Bogen as opposed to the lower situated castle near Bogen.
NATO Installations
The German Air Force Fernmeldesektor F operated a listening post on Hoher Bogen until 2004. The French Air Force unit was co-located with the Germans until 1994. The U.S. Army and Air Force had vacated their neighboring installation in 1992. The U.S. Army had at one time been located lower down on the mountain at a seasonal (summer only) site.
Note: Usage in German language will change the spelling: Hohen Bogen, Hoher Bogen, Hohe Bogen, Höhe Bogen, etc.
