Weed is U.S. Army jargon, but in Rimbach, it was a term or label applied to a person of any branch of service who was relatively new to his or her job, position or the duty station itself.
Simply put, a weed was a new person.
The point of service or time in position at which a new person was no longer considered a weed varied, and usually depended on the person’s acquired knowledge of and ability to perform his or her job.
The term was not limited to use in Rimbach and remains in widespread use in the U.S. military today. The term can also be found in civilian use, possibly through the return to civilian life of military veterans.
The U.S. Air Force continues to use the term “Jeep” to identify a new person. Your on-the-job trainer becomes the person who “jeeps” you in.
